So there is an article in Wall Street Journal (OK, You’re a Runner. Get over It. Running a marathon is hard enough without patting yourself on the back every step of the way) that centered on allegedly obnoxious runners. When I first read it, I thought it was laugh out loud funny. We runners do indeed like our marathon sticker/decals. In general, most people are happy for you, impressed, think you are lying, whatever. Actually, the more that I think about it, there are people who glorify the sport to make people envious, but people like that are lame (and they don’t count).
But then when I reflected on the article today it today my thoughts were different. This dude isn’t just jealous. He is out right bitter! So, I had to do some investigation, and low and behold I was able to find a picture of him. Let’s just say that he should pick on somebody his own size. Seriously, I see decals/stickers/car tags of various hobbies, accomplishments, number of people in one’s household, and college degrees all the time. I really wonder why he decided to target people who complete half marathons and full marathons?
Runners don’t go around bothering people or being boastful about their hobby. You want to know why? Runners are tired from the RUNNING that we do, along with the fact that we have to do other stuff during the day. However, if you make the choice of asking us about it, we can talk about it for days on end (hence, the blog). Truth be told, this was the main reason that I even got on Facebook last year. I wanted to connect with other runners in my area that I previously knew.
(See there, everyone can represent! )
